About Dental Veneers

What is the difference between a crown and a veneer? While dental crowns and veneers are a very similar type of restoration, there are a few key differences. One of the main differences between crowns and veneers is that a dental crown covers the entire tooth. Dental veneers only covers the front and sides of a tooth. Porcelain veneers are colored matched to blend in with your surrounding natural teeth.

The restoration is a very thin shell that we will permanently bond to the front and sides of your tooth to hide just about any imperfection. Since veneers are not porous, they will not stain easily.

Veneers are commonly used to:

  • Fix gaps between teeth
  • Repair chipped or broken teeth
  • Improve the appearance of crooked or misshaped teeth
  • Change the shape or length of teeth
  • Cover stained or discolored teeth

About the Procedure

dental veneers before and after

At Howard County Smiles we use CEREC technology to design, fabricate and fit dental veneers in just one visit to our Columbia, MD dentist office. In just one visit you can have your dental veneers custom-designed and milled on site.

The dentist will remove a substantial amount of tooth enamel to allow room for the dental veneer. Next, he will use the state-of-the-art CAD/CAM technology of CEREC, to take precise digital images of your prepared teeth. Using these 3-D images, the dentist is able to create beautiful and natural dental veneers. This eliminates the need for messy impression trays and reduces the amount of time it takes to design a custom veneer.

Once the design is complete, and the patient is satisfied with the digital preview of their new teeth, we will use our onsite laboratory equipment to fabricate your veneer while you wait. The custom veneer will be permanently bonded to the prepared teeth. Patients are able to leave our dentist office with their newly restored, beautiful smiles.

Our dentist has taught advanced esthetics and has years of experience providing impeccable results with same-day dental veneers. You can enjoy the benefits of your total smile makeover in just one visit to our dentist office.

Porcelain Veneers FAQ

Porcelain veneers can treat almost any cosmetic dental concern. Read the answers to these commonly asked questions to learn more.

How much do porcelain veneers cost?

The cost of porcelain veneers varies depending on the material used, the number of porcelain veneers placed, and the patient’s specific condition. Before treatment, we will fully review the procedure, including the porcelain veneer cost. We offer convenient payment options including interest-free financing through Care Credit for qualified patients.

How long do porcelain veneers last?

On average, porcelain veneers last for 10-15 years or more. Some patients have porcelain veneers that last for decades. Proper care and maintenance will help you achieve this longevity. That includes a proper at-home hygiene routine and regular visits to the dentist for professional cleaning and examination.

Is the porcelain veneer procedure painful?

Patients often worry about the pain associated with porcelain veneers. We ensure that each patient undergoing treatment with porcelain veneers is comfortable and relaxed. Moreover, it is common for patients to experience some mild sensitivity immediately following treatment. In short, these symptoms generally subside within 1-3 days of treatment.

Can porcelain veneers fall off?

While it’s unusual, it can happen. Biting down directly on too hard or sticky foods can damage the veneers or cause them to fall off. They also need to have a strong, solid foundation. If you aren’t taking care of the natural teeth under the veneers, they can succumb to decay, leading the veneers to loosen or fall off.

Are porcelain veneers high maintenance?

No, they’re a pretty low-maintenance restoration. You don’t have to do anything but brush and floss your teeth like you normally would. It’s essential to maintain good brushing and flossing habits to take care of the natural teeth that are under your restoration. We recommend soft-bristled toothbrushes and non-abrasive toothpaste to ensure you don’t scratch the veneers.

Can you go back to normal after veneers?

No, once you have porcelain veneers, you will always need to have a restoration on those teeth. We remove a small amount of tooth structure to make room for those veneers. The tooth will no longer have that protective outer layer of tooth enamel on it, exposing more sensitive inner layers of the tooth.
