CEREC® Dental Crown Columbia, MD

Dr. Ray Becker may recommend the use of a dental crown for a wide range of cosmetic dentistry and restorative purposes. A dental crown covers the entire tooth surface like a cap, adding strength, aesthetics and lasting function. Dental crowns can be made from several types of materials, all of which have enjoyed advances in recent years and can provide a lasting result.

Dr. Becker will recommend the most appropriate type of dental crown for your dental health and cosmetic needs. In most cases, a porcelain or ceramic crown is suggested for a durable, aesthetic result. Dr. Ray Becker places dental crowns in his Columbia, MD dentist office, often during a single visit using CEREC® technology. Dental crowns can be used to treat:

  • Damaged teeth: chipped or cracked teeth
  • Severely decayed tooth
  • Discolored teeth that don’t respond to teeth whitening
  • Misshapen teeth
  • After a root canal to strengthen a tooth
  • To strengthen anchor teeth for a dental bridge or other appliance

Types of Dental Crowns

Gold: A gold dental crown requires the least amount of tooth structure to be removed. It is most suitable for the back teeth because they do not wear down easily. The major disadvantage of a gold crown is that it will stand out from a natural tooth which is another reason why most people prefer them on their back teeth. This type of crown cannot be placed in one day. A gold crown is fabricated in a dental lab and takes about two weeks to complete.

Porcelain: Porcelain crowns are very durable and stain resistant. They will blend with the rest of your natural teeth since they are made of layers of fine ceramic material which matches natural tooth enamel. This material is very versatile and can be used on any tooth however it does require more tooth structure to be removed to accommodate it. This type of crown can be placed in one day with CEREC® technology.

About Dental Crowns Process

dental crown procedure at Ellicott MD dentistPorcelain dental crowns are highly durable, stain resistant, and very natural looking. The process for dental crowns takes place in one visit to our Columbia, MD dentist office thanks to CEREC® technology:

Initial Visit –Dr. Becker will conduct a thorough examination of your overall dental health. Using diagnostic x-rays, molds and impressions, they will look for signs of decay, stress and instability that could compromise your results. This exam will help us to design a personalized treatment plan that will restore the tooth to optimal health and function. Your Columbia, MD dentist will discuss the various options you have for a dental crown and help you make the best choice.

Tooth Preparation – Once the treatment plan is finalized, Dr. Becker will prepare the tooth/teeth by removing a small amount of the natural tooth structure to accommodate the dental crown. With CEREC® technology, the need for a temporary tooth cap is not necessary. Dr. Becker will take digital images of the prepared tooth and create a digital 3-D model of the new dental crown. These images are used to fabricate a comfortable, beautiful and natural functioning dental crown using our onsite dental laboratory equipment.

Final Restoration – For patients receiving a dental crown using CEREC® technology, their restoration can be created while they wait. In just one visit to our Columbia, MD dentist office, you may be fit with your final dental crown restoration. Once you and Dr. Becker are happy with the fit, look, and position of the crown, it will be bonded to the tooth and polished. Patients will enjoy immediate results.
