Comparing Dentures and Dental Implants

Do you have missing teeth? Are you looking for dental treatments that help restore the full function and aesthetics of your smile?

Dr. Ray Becker offers effective dental treatments for missing teeth in Columbia, MD. At Howard County Smiles, Dr. Becker works with patients to find the best treatments for their specific needs. Some of the most popular restorative treatments for missing teeth are dentures and dental implants. Below we will compare the two dental solutions, as these treatments work for patients with different budgets and goals.

What are Dentures?

Dentures are best for patients with multiple missing teeth or even full arches of teeth. Traditional dentures consist of a resin and metal base with prosthetic teeth. Although removable traditional dentures may seem like a more economical treatment upfront, they need to be readjusted or even replaced over time.

Dentures lay on top of the gums and require messy adhesives to stay in place. Because dentures can slip around the mouth, they do not retain the bite, and only restore 30 to 40 percent of bite function. They also have dietary restrictions and need to be removed to be cleaned.

The Benefits of Dental Implants

A dental implant consists of a titanium post that is placed inside the jawbone, an attaching abutment, and a dental crown. Dental implants are also able to support a dental bridge or a secured denture. Implant-secured dentures and bridges last longer than removable options.

Implants replace teeth at the root to provide stability and balance to the bite. They restore full bite function so you do not need to worry about slipping or dietary restrictions. Dental implants may cost more upfront, but they are a permanent restoration. They also look and feel like natural teeth and fight against jawbone deterioration. Implants fuse with the jawbone and support bone growth.
