Porcelain vs Gold Crowns

Dental crowns are a versatile dental treatment used to restore the appearance and function of teeth. Some of the most common types of dental crowns are porcelain or gold tooth crowns. Columbia, MD dentist Dr. Ray Becker provides both gold and porcelain tooth crowns to patients.

Both of these types of dental crowns provide durability but come with different perks for patients. Dr. Becker will take your goals, budget, and oral health needs into account before helping you choose a crown.

What Do Porcelain Crowns Do?

Porcelain dental crowns can be used to cap off dental implants, hold together cracked teeth, and protect teeth from further damage. Because they are crafted from porcelain material, this type of crown easily blends in with the rest of our patient’s smiles. We are also able to color-match these crowns for a natural look.

Dr. Becker uses CEREC® to place porcelain tooth crowns. Also known as Computer-Aided Design/Computer-Aided Manufacturing, CAD/CAM technology used in CEREC restorations allow patients to receive crowns in just one dental visit. With this technology, Dr. Becker can take impressions of teeth that require crowns, mill the crowns in-office, and then place the crowns in one day.

What Are the Benefits of Gold Crowns?

Gold metal dental crowns provide stability for patients with worn or damaged teeth. This type of dental crown is especially effective in the back of the mouth, where the jaw exerts the most biting pressure. Gold tooth crowns are best for back molars that may be worn down, cracked, or broken.

You can receive these metal crowns in just several visits to our office. Dr. Becker will take dental impressions of your teeth and send these specifications to a lab, where they are fabricated. Once complete, Dr. Becker will prepare the tooth or teeth receiving the crown and then ensure that they fit comfortably.
